Multichain Official: Team Forced to Cease Operations, Previously Stolen $120 Million Transferred by CEO's Family

PANews July 14th news, Multichain official responded to the incident of being stolen 120 million US dollars, stating that the CEO Zhao Jun's sister transferred the user's assets, but later his sister was arrested by the Kunming police. Due to the lack of alternative sources of information and corresponding operating funds, the team was forced to stop operations. If there is any further notice and progress, the team will update the community accordingly. The Multichain team does not have the right to access the domain account to redirect or close the front-end http://multichain.org. Please widely inform and hope that users will no longer use Multichain services.

The specific process is as follows:

On May 21st, Zhao Jun, the CEO of Multichain, was taken away by the Chinese police from his home and has since lost contact with the global Multichain team. The team contacted the MPC node operators and learned that their access keys to the MPC node servers had been revoked. Moreover, these MPC node servers, like other regular servers, are actually running under Zhao Jun's personal cloud server account. There is no member in the team who can access Zhao Jun's personal cloud server account, so no one can log in to these MPC servers.

Subsequently, the team contacted Zhao Jun's family and learned that all of Zhao Jun's computers, phones, hardware wallets, and mnemonic phrases had been confiscated by the authorities. Since the start of the project, all operating funds and investor investments have been controlled by Zhao Jun. This also means that the team's access to funds and servers is in the hands of Zhao Jun and the police.

Due to the lack of information related to the case, the team can only try to maintain the project operation to the best of their ability through the remaining access permissions on some non-MPC servers that have not been revoked. Based on the advice of lawyers, the team chooses to cooperate as much as possible with the requests of Zhao Jun's family and comply with the requirements of local laws and regulations, without disclosing unauthorized case information to the public.

On May 30th, with a sense of responsibility to the community, the team released the news of Zhao Jun's disappearance and informed the community of the technical issues they are currently facing.

On June 4th, Zhao Jun's family successfully logged into the cloud server platform using historical information on the home computer. However, Zhao Jun's family only allowed Multichain team engineers to physically access the home computer to fix the technical issues with Router2 and Router5. During this period, Zhao Jun's family and lawyers have been communicating with the police. The team did not learn the details of the case, but learned that Zhao Jun is about to be released and requested to continue maintaining the system and wait for further news. The Multichain protocol continues to operate as designed. The team is doing their best to maintain the operation of the multi-chain protocol with limited resources and solve user problems as much as possible.

On July 7th, user assets locked on the MPC address were abnormally transferred to an unknown address. According to Zhao Jun's sister, login information from Kunming IP address was found on the cloud server platform, as well as a series of operations transferring funds from the MPC address.

On July 9th, Zhao Jun's sister transferred the remaining user assets in the router pool and subsequently notified the team and multiple project parties of this asset preservation action. The funds were transferred to the EOA address controlled by Zhao Jun's sister. 0x1eed63efba5f81d95bfe37d82c8e736b974f477b 0x6b6314f4f07c974600d872182dcde092c480e57b

On July 13th, based on the information provided by Zhao Jun's family, the police took Zhao Jun's sister away. Now, Zhao Jun's sister has also lost contact. The status of the assets she has saved is uncertain, so the team believes it is necessary to inform the community of all known circumstances.
